Getting a Spanish driving licence as a foreigner is very doable — and you can take the theory test in English. Here's the whole process from start to finish, so you know exactly what's ahead.

First, a key question: if you hold an EU licence, you can often use or exchange it without re-testing. Some non-EU countries also have exchange agreements with Spain. If neither applies to you, you take the full Spanish test — which is what this guide covers.

The step-by-step process

1
Get your NIE / residency
You need a NIE number or Spanish residency before you can apply for the test. Without it, you can't book a DGT appointment.
2
Pass the medical (psicotécnico)
A quick check of vision, reflexes and general fitness at an authorised centre. You get a certificate that's sent to the DGT.
3
Study and pass the theory test — in English
30 questions, 30 minutes, maximum 3 mistakes. You can sit it in English. This is the part you prepare for online, then take in person at the DGT. See our DGT test in English guide.
4
Take driving lessons & pass the practical
Once the theory is passed, you do practical lessons and the on-road exam. The practical test is conducted in Spanish.
5
Get your licence
Pass both and you receive your Spanish Class B driving licence.

How long does it take?

It varies, but the theory is the part you control most. With focused daily practice many people are ready for the theory exam in a few weeks. Appointment availability at your local DGT office can add time, so book early.

What does it cost?

Costs include the DGT application fee, the medical certificate, and (if you use one) a driving school. Studying the theory yourself online keeps that part cheap — you only really need a good question bank in English.
