You can sit the official DGT theory test in English, but the exam is booked and taken in person at a DGT office (Jefatura de Tráfico). Here is the order things have to happen.
Before you can book
- Get your NIE or residency. You need a Spanish identity/residency number to request a DGT appointment.
- Pass the medical (psicotécnico). A quick check at an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores. It's valid for 90 days, so do it close to when you'll apply.
- Pay the DGT fee (tasa 2.1). €94.05 in 2026, which covers two exam attempts.
Two ways to book
By yourself (por libre): you complete the application and book the cita previa through the DGT's Sede Electrónica (sede.dgt.gob.es) or by phone, then choose English when you register for the exam.
On the day
Bring your ID (NIE/TIE or passport), and arrive early. The exam is 30 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, with a maximum of 3 mistakes. You choose English on the exam computer. Results are usually available the same day.
