Exchanging a Foreign Driving Licence in Spain (Canje)
If your country has an exchange agreement with Spain, you may be able to swap your licence without taking any exams. Here's how the canje process works.
Who can exchange without exams
- EU/EEA licence holders — yes, straightforward exchange.
- Countries with a bilateral agreement — yes, subject to conditions (the DGT publishes the current list).
- Everyone else — no; you must pass the Spanish theory and practical tests.
The exchange process
- Confirm your country is on the current DGT exchange list.
- Book an appointment (cita previa) at a Jefatura de Tráfico.
- Pass the required medical check.
- Submit your licence, ID/NIE, empadronamiento, photos, forms and fee.
- Receive your Spanish licence; you usually surrender the foreign one.
The exchange list and conditions change. Verify your eligibility on the official DGT website before booking.
If you can't exchange
You'll take the Spanish theory exam (available in English) and the practical test. Start theory practice early — it's the step most foreigners underestimate.
