Canje: Exchanging a UK Licence in Spain

'Canje' is the Spanish word for exchanging a foreign licence for a Spanish one. For UK licences, whether you can do it without exams has been the big post-Brexit question.

What 'canje' means

A canje lets you swap a valid foreign licence for the Spanish equivalent without taking the theory or practical tests — but only if an exchange agreement is in force between Spain and the issuing country, and you meet the conditions.

The UK situation since Brexit

The UK–Spain exchange arrangement has changed several times since Brexit, with periods where exchange was suspended and periods where it resumed under specific conditions. Because it keeps changing, the only safe approach is to check the current status directly with the DGT before counting on a canje.

If canje is not available when you need it, the alternative is to pass the Spanish theory and practical tests — and the theory can be taken in English.

If you have to test instead of exchange

Don't let an expired grace period leave you driving illegally. If exchange isn't possible, start the theory preparation early. UK drivers typically know the rules but fail on translation, so practising with clear English questions is the quickest path.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exchange (canje) my UK licence in Spain in 2026?

It depends on the current UK–Spain agreement, which has fluctuated since Brexit. Check the DGT's latest guidance; if exchange isn't available you must pass the Spanish tests.

What documents does a canje need?

Typically your valid UK licence, passport, NIE/residency proof, empadronamiento, a medical certificate, photos and the DGT application and fee. Requirements can vary — confirm with the DGT.

What if exchange isn't available?

You take the Spanish theory exam (available in English) and the practical test, the same as a new driver.
