Getting a Spanish Driving Licence as a Foreigner
Whether you need to exchange an existing licence or start from scratch, the route to a Spanish licence depends on where your current licence is from and how long you've lived in Spain. Here's the whole picture.
Which route applies to you?
- EU/EEA licence holders can generally drive in Spain on their existing licence and exchange it without re-sitting tests.
- Holders from countries with an exchange agreement (a list maintained by the DGT) can exchange their licence, sometimes without exams.
- Everyone else (including, as a general rule, UK, US and Australian licence holders without an agreement in force) must pass the Spanish theory and practical tests to drive once resident.
If you have to take the tests
You'll complete the same process as a new Spanish driver: a medical check, the theory exam (30 questions, 3 mistakes allowed, available in English) and the practical driving test. The theory exam is where most foreigners struggle, mainly due to translation, so good English practice material makes a real difference.

Residency and the 6-month rule
Once you become a legal resident in Spain, there's generally a limited window during which you can keep using a non-exchangeable foreign licence before you must hold a Spanish one. Don't let this lapse — driving on an invalid licence can mean fines and insurance problems.
Typical documents you'll need
- Valid passport and NIE / residency document.
- Proof of address (empadronamiento).
- Medical certificate from an authorised centre (centro de reconocimiento).
- Passport-style photos and the relevant DGT application form and fee.
Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners get a Spanish driving licence?
Yes. Depending on your country, you either exchange your existing licence or pass the Spanish theory and practical tests. The theory test is available in English.
Do I have to take the test in Spanish?
No. The DGT offers the theory exam in English and other languages; your autoescuela selects English when booking.
How long can I drive on my foreign licence in Spain?
EU licences are valid until expiry. Non-EU licences are generally valid for a limited period after you become resident, after which you need a Spanish licence. Check the current DGT rules for your country.
