Driving in Spain for Germans
As an EU licence holder, you have it easier than most — but there are still things German residents in Spain should know.
Good news: your EU licence is valid
A German (EU) driving licence is valid throughout Spain. You can drive on it and, when needed, exchange it for a Spanish licence without re-sitting the theory or practical tests. You may choose to exchange it for administrative convenience or when it expires.
When Germans still take the theory test
If you're learning to drive for the first time while resident in Spain, or upgrading to a category not covered by your German licence, you'll sit the Spanish theory exam. It's available in English, which many German speakers find clearer than the Spanish original.

Spanish road rules worth noting
- No general autobahn-style unlimited speed — motorway limit is typically 120 km/h.
- Urban limits are often 30 km/h on single-lane-per-direction streets.
- Roundabout and priority rules are tested in detail on the theory exam.
- Strict drink-driving limits, lower for novice and professional drivers.
