Getting a Spanish licence is a clear sequence of steps. Here's the whole thing in order, with links to the detail on each stage.
The 8 steps
- 1. Get your NIE / residency. You need a Spanish identity/residency number to apply.
- 2. Pass the medical (psicotécnico). A short fitness-to-drive check at a Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores — valid 90 days.
- 3. Pay the DGT fee (tasa 2.1): €94.05. It covers two exam attempts.
- 4. Study the theory — in English. Road signs, priority, speed, alcohol and the 2026 rules. This is where most people lose marks, so drill it until you're consistent.
- 5. Book your exam (cita previa). Via an autoescuela or the DGT — here's how.
- 6. Pass the theory test. 30 questions, 30 minutes, max 3 mistakes. Available in English.
- 7. Take practical lessons. With a driving school, in a dual-control car.
- 8. Pass the practical. An examiner assesses you on real roads. Then your licence is issued.
How long does it take?
The theory can be ready in 2–4 weeks of daily practice; the practical depends on how many lessons you need. The fastest lever is nailing the theory early — in English — so you're not stuck re-sitting it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to speak Spanish to get a licence?
No — the theory test can be taken in English. Practical lessons can often be arranged in English too.
What's the minimum I need before booking the exam?
A NIE/residency, a valid medical certificate (psicotécnico), and the paid DGT fee (tasa 2.1, €94.05).
Can I skip the tests if I already have a licence?
If your country has an exchange agreement with Spain, you may exchange without testing — otherwise you take the theory and practical.
